Video Game Development Exposed PT1

So you're a video game developer yes?

Well that's excellent, because I have very good news for you, you are very, very special ...

You are likely very gifted and multi-talented in more ways that you could ever possibly realize.

If you can program then this is a gift, and if you can draw game sprites from scratch then this is another, and if you can compose music coupled with the former two mentioned gifts then you're practically an all-in-1 video game producing extraordinaire.

There's even a forth and a fifth involved too, it's called psychology and project management. More on this a bit later.

Unfortunately, far and few people posses all 5 aforementioned talents, so often enough -- it does really require a team of skilled people to produce a video game. The size of the team could range from 5 to plenty meaning maybe 20.

The essential 5 Key Ingredients

1. project management
2. Psychology / game design ...
3. Graphic design
4. Programming ...
5. Music & sound effects composition

And WOW to you if you feel that you have all 5 abilities, because most people don't (including myself)

So, what are everyone's thought on the 5 major aspects of successful video game development?

I am keen to hear your thoughts before we proceed!

Trent Jackson

Its usually the last two I have problems with, more so music than actual programming.

I play the althorn, therefore I'm good in composing music. I, for one thinks that I have all the above mentioned. I am also good in 3rd animating.

I'm nearly there :)
Project management isn't really something I do, not for my games anyway. I touch parts of project management in my day job but I would never get any game out the door if I did it at home. Hardly have enough time to create games!
As for game design, difficult one. Can't say my games are that original, so tend to go with (nick) gameplay that has proven itself to work over the years.
I'm proud to say I do 3 to 5 though :D

Yes I have to admit that the majority of mine are not exactly 100% original either.

I tend to either clone a game outright, or take the abstract pieces from a few different games and couple them together.

I enjoy the logic aspect of it and seeing something being brought to life.

Not that big on actually playing games, however, though ...

Wild Waters is likely my only entirely original game actually.

Cool  3D modeling is one thing I've never mastered and probably never will. Ah well, I'll stick to pixels :teehee:

What on earth? When did the subject of this thread turn from game development to criminals?
